In 2008, former Gov. John Huntsman established a voluntary renewable energy portfolio goal for Utah utilities to generate 20 percent of their retail electricity sales from renewable sources by 2025, to the extent it is cost-effective to do so.
Qualifying sources include solar, wind, certain forms of biomass, certain hydroelectric sources, wave, tidal or ocean-thermal energy, geothermal, waste gas, and waste heat, methane gas, municipal solid waste, and compressed air energy storage.
There are no interim target dates, only an end goal target year of 2025.
Utilities may purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) to meet the target goal.
