ATI’s Chesser: Duke Energy Juggernaut Won’t Stop Shakedown Artists
By Paul Chesser - American Tradition Institute
If it wasn’t already obvious, then a report in Friday’s Raleigh News & Observer about the merger hearings between Duke Energy and Progress Energy into the nation’s largest utility makes it clear: That Duke’s strategy is continued growth into “a political juggernaut.”
That’s what came out of the final day of testimony about the deal before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, which appears to be the final major hurdle for the merger’s approval. The N&O cited “hints” by company executives about “further acquisitions down the road,” in which Duke would wield even more power than they do now.

I like to read the Statesville R&L newspaper. It gets my blood moving on most mornings. Take last Monday, October 17th, the article under “Inside Iredell Extension” about the Iredell 4-H’ers competition hosted by Lincoln County 4-H to see who could build a wind turbine the fastest. The youth were provided the materials. The article did not say where the materials came from, but a guest speaker was there. His name was Mr. Tony Dorazio, Vice President of the Wind Energy at Duke Energy. I am sure a good time was had by all.
What got my blood going was the fact that a few days before reading this artiticle, I had received a notice from Duke Power, in my mail box, about the proposed rate increase (15.2%) they had asked for on July 1, 2011. That was not the flame that started my blood boiling. It was the next paragraph.
“The company has also requested a 12-month rider to cover $3.7 million of costs associated with its abandoned Coastal Demonstration Wind Turbine Project. The rider request will be reviewed in conjunction with the general rate case.” Now we know where the materials came from.
If you are like me, watching pennies is a day to day event at our house. I finally got my electric bill down below $100 last month. With winter coming and if I keep reading about companies like Duke Power and their wasting money on “GREEN” stuff and then having the nerve to want to bill me, the consumer, for ideas that never made sense to the majority of people, I should stay warm all winter with my boiling blood.
