Core Values

Scientific Integrity: Since before the time of Galileo, the scientific community has been duly concerned about the threat of political influence upon scientific thought and progress. In the age of the internet, where free exchange of ideas and information makes science at once available to all and creates opportunities to bring great minds together in community, one would hope the scourge of censorship and suppression would be a relic of the “Dark Ages”. Today the combined threat of political correctness, government coercion by a protected bureaucratic/political class, and the multi-billion dollar “green” lobby presents what could be a perfect storm, drowning the voices of people all over the world yearning for a better standard of living through the benefits of free markets and scientific progress.

Accessibility of Information: Our research papers and legal briefs have impact in the court and the committee hearing, but it would be a disservice not to serve such important information and discoveries - and the policies that derive from them - to the public in a convenient, useable form. We serve to make information and resources available to not only scientists, policy wonks and lawmakers, but to maximize impact upon lay citizens the world over. Through a growing number of interactive online tools, short- and long-form videos, and other media, ATI is dedicated to packaging and presenting information in the most impactful and accessible manner possible. - Government Transparency - Somewhere along the way, political elites have turned the principle of transparency on its head, arguing for protection of privacy for taxpayer-funded projects, agencies, and actors (think “academic freedom” and Freedom of Information Act roadblocks) while accusing private citizens and entities of malfeasance for simply protecting their private and proprietary information from undue scrutiny. ATI intends to reframe the debate so that taxpayers and those interests who serve them can rely on stable, transparent tax and regulatory processes and know what their money is being spent on - and why. Further, ATI will strategically intervene on behalf of private citizens who are targeted in retaliation for legitimate demands of government accountability.

Constitutional Principles: Our Founding Fathers saw government as necessary to protect life, property and commerce, and limited its role by enshrining these values in our Constitution. American Tradition Institute holds Constitutional principles as paramount in providing a framework for the careful balance of individual rights and necessary environmental protection.

True Sustainability: ATI holds among our core values that any discussion of “sustainability”must consider economic viability as essential, for policy that is neither science-based nor cost-effective cannot endure. ATI is an organization born of the serious need for a long-term strategy to replace the politically driven environmental agenda with the kind of science-based, financially sustainable policy solutions under which our free society can prosper.

COMMITMENT TO INDEPENDENCE
American Tradition Institute maintains intellectual and financial independence from partisan interests, and does not serve at the whim of any particular industry or private concern. History proves that no political party is devoid of a self-serving agenda and that the free and open exchange of ideas and goods, with minimal interference, yields the best possible outcome. Our long-term dedication is not to a political party but to the belief that responsible, free-market environmental stewardship is possible without onerous supervision, heavy regulation, and requisite coerced financial support of taxpayer-funded institutions.

To these ends, the Institute also has within its mission to defend the free and open exchange of ideas, and will from time to time, join with other organizations in actions to preserve and protect free speech rights.
ATI is governed by an independent board of directors with no direct ties to interested parties and never advocates for the election or defeat of any candidate for elected office.

American Tradition Institute: Independent. Proactive. Incisive.

About American Tradition Institute

History and Founding Principles American Tradition Institute (ATI) is a public policy research and educational foundation - a "think tank" - founded in 2009 to help lead the national discussion about environmental issues, including air and water quality and regulation, responsible land use, natural resource management, energy development, property rights, and free-market principles of stewardship. American Tradition Institute utilizes a three-pronged strategy to advance responsible, economically sustainable environmental policy: Research, investigative journalism, and litigation, via our Environmental Law Center. Our combination of expert policy analysis, exposing truth, and redressing wrongs in court advances the cause of liberty, and will...
